Real Black Leather Shirts For Women
Black leather shirts are the version most people picture and the hardest to buy well, because the market is full of coated fabric sold under the same description. This one is real hide — and since you cannot feel a shirt through a screen, this page explains what that actually means and how to tell.
- Material: Real leather
- Fit: Regular shirt fit
- Closure: Button front with buttoned cuffs
- Color: Black
- Care: Dry cloth only, hang do not fold, condition twice a year
How to tell a real leather shirt when it arrives
Four checks, none needing expertise. Grain: real hide has irregular grain that changes across a panel; a coating repeats a pattern at intervals. Edges: look inside a cuff or hem — leather shows a fibrous cross-section, coated fabric shows a woven backing. Smell: leather smells like leather, coating smells faintly of plastic. Warmth: hide warms to your skin within a minute; a coating stays cool.
We are explicit about this because we also sell faux leather shirts, clearly labelled, in the same Women Leather Shirts range. Both are legitimate purchases; knowing which you are buying is the point.
Why a leather shirt is harder to make than a jacket
Smaller pieces and tighter curves. A jacket has large flat panels; a shirt has a collar with a stand, a placket, cuffs and a yoke, all of which need the hide to turn through a tight radius without bulking.
That is why leather shirts use thin, soft hide rather than jacket weight, and why the leather has to be selected for even thickness — a panel that varies in thickness will not turn evenly at the collar.
The buttonhole problem
Buttonholes are where leather shirts fail. A hole in hide has no stretch and takes the same stress at the same point every time you fasten it, so an unreinforced placket elongates its holes within a year and the shirt stops sitting closed.
The placket here is reinforced behind the buttonholes, and the holes are cut and finished rather than punched. It is invisible on the product page and it is the difference between a shirt that lasts and one that does not.
Fit and styling
Regular shirt fit. Take your normal shirt size — but note that leather has no ease, so a shirt that measures the same as your cotton one will feel closer. If in doubt, size up or take the free Custom option.
Buttoned with tailored trousers it is sharp; open over a plain tee with jeans it is casual. Black works either way. See our Women Leather Jackets to wear over it, or Women Leather Pants to match.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know it is real leather?
Check the grain (irregular, not repeating), the cut edge inside a cuff (fibrous, not woven), the smell, and whether it warms to your skin. All four distinguish hide from a coating.
Do you also sell faux leather shirts?
Yes, clearly labelled as such in the same collection. Both are legitimate; knowing which you are buying is what matters.
Why is a leather shirt harder to make than a jacket?
Smaller pieces and tighter curves — a collar stand, placket and cuffs all need the hide to turn through a tight radius without bulking.
Will the buttonholes stretch out?
Not here. The placket is reinforced behind them and the holes are cut and finished rather than punched.
Does it fit like a cotton shirt?
It will feel closer at the same measurements, because leather has no ease. Size up if in doubt.
Is it hot to wear?
Leather does not breathe like cotton, so it is warmer. Most people wear it as an outer layer in cooler months.
How do I care for it?
Dry cloth only, hang rather than fold, condition twice a year. Never machine wash or dry clean.
