Overview & specifications
Pilot A-2 Brown Flight Jacket
Pockets are the most-used part of any jacket and the least discussed. On an A-2 they are also unusual, because the pattern deliberately excludes the pocket most modern jackets have. Worth explaining before you buy. It sits in our aviator and pilot leather jackets range.
- Material: Genuine leather
- Fit: A-2 cut
- Closure: Front zip with knit trims
- Color: Brown
- Care: Dry wipe, condition twice a year, empty pockets before hanging
Why there are no hand-warmer pockets
Modern jackets almost always have slash pockets at the hip for your hands. The A-2 has none, and that was deliberate: a pilot in a cockpit had no use for hand-warmers, and an open slash pocket is a place for things to fall out of when you are strapped in and moving. Instead the A-2 has two flapped patch pockets on the chest — closed, secure, and reachable while seated. If you are used to putting your hands in your jacket pockets, an A-2 will feel odd for the first week. It is the one genuine ergonomic compromise in the pattern.
What actually fits in them
The patch pockets are large — large enough for a phone, a wallet, gloves, or a folded map, which is what they were sized for. The flaps keep everything in. What they will not do is take weight permanently: a patch pocket on leather sags if something heavy lives in it, so empty them before hanging the jacket up. Both top corners should be bar-tacked, which is the reinforcement that stops the corner tearing under load.
Adding a hand pocket later
Some owners have slash pockets added behind the patch pockets by a leather workshop. It is a straightforward alteration and it does not damage the jacket, though it moves the garment away from the original pattern. Worth knowing that the option exists.
Stated plainly: a fashion jacket in the A-2 style. Not military issue, no insignia or squadron markings, no affiliation with any air force.

Yes, a leather workshop can add slash pockets behind the patch pockets, though it moves away from the original pattern.
Is this military issue?
No. It is a fashion jacket with no insignia or affiliation.
