Overview & specifications
Men’s USAAF A-2 Bomber Brown Jacket
Stated first: this is a fashion jacket in the A-2 style — not military issue, not surplus, with no insignia, data stencils, squadron art or unit markings, and no affiliation with any air force. What follows is about the colour, because "brown" covers a surprising range on an A-2 and the shade changes the jacket. It sits in our aviator and pilot leather jackets range.
- Material: Genuine leather
- Fit: A-2 cut, close chest and short body
- Closure: Front zip with knit trims and a snap-down collar
- Color: Brown
- Care: Dry wipe, clear conditioner twice a year, hang on a broad hanger
The browns of the A-2
Historic A-2 jackets ran across a genuine spectrum because different manufacturers used different tanneries. Russet is a warm reddish brown, the lightest of the common shades, and it is the one that develops the most dramatic contrast with wear. Seal brown is much darker, almost a very deep chocolate, and it reads far more formal — closer to what a black jacket does. Mid brown sits between them and is the most versatile. There was never one correct A-2 brown, which is why originals in museums look so different from one another.
How to choose a shade
Ask what you will wear it with. Russet and light browns want denim, cream and olive; they look casual and they develop character fast. Seal brown works with grey, navy and black, reads smarter, and stays looking new for longer. If you want one jacket for both, a mid brown is the answer.
Ageing
Whichever shade, brown A-2 leather lightens at the shoulders, elbows and front edges while the creases stay dark. Lighter shades show this sooner and more dramatically. Use a clear conditioner twice a year — a pigmented one fills the light areas and flattens the effect entirely.
Sizing and made to order
