Naval and army flight jackets looked different — and here is why
Both services flew, and both issued leather jackets, but the resulting garments diverged. Naval jackets tended toward fur or shearling collars, because carrier decks and open cockpits over water are brutally cold and wet. Army air-force jackets used leather collars, because they were more often worn under a harness where a bulky collar was a nuisance. Naval jackets often carried a bi-swing back for working movement; army ones usually did not. And the colours differed — naval leather ran darker and browner, army leather toward russet and seal brown, largely because the two services bought from different tanneries under different contracts.
Why any of that matters to a buyer now
It tells you what you are choosing between. A fur-collared naval-style jacket is warmer and bulkier at the neck; a leather-collared one is lighter and layers under a coat better. Neither is more authentic than the other — they answered different problems.
Ageing
Brown leather lightens at the shoulders, elbows and front edges while creases stay dark, so contrast builds over the years. Use a clear conditioner twice a year; a pigmented one flattens the developing contrast.
Sizing and made to order
Measure your chest over a T-shirt and buy close — leather relaxes with wear and does not shrink back. Sizes run XS to 5XL, with Custom taking chest, waist, shoulder, sleeve, and body length.
