Men's Real Leather Chaps | 100% Cowhide Motorcycle Chaps
Chaps are an unusual garment and often misunderstood — they are not trousers, and they are not meant to be. Understanding what they actually are makes both the fit and the purpose clear. They sit in our leather pants range.
- Material: 100% genuine cowhide
- Fit: Worn over trousers, belted at the waist
- Closure: Belted waist with full-length side zips
- Color: Black
- Care: Dry cloth, condition twice a year, hang by the belt
What chaps actually are
Chaps are leg coverings worn over trousers. They have no seat and no crotch — the two legs are joined only by a belt at the waist, and there is an open gap at the back. That is not a design flaw; it is the entire point. The open back means you can put them on and take them off over boots without removing anything, and it means they add a layer of leather to the front and sides of the leg without the heat and bulk of a full second pair of trousers. They come from ranch work, where the front of the leg took thorns and brush while the seat stayed against a saddle.
How to size chaps
Because they go over trousers, measure over the trousers you intend to wear, not over bare legs. The two figures that matter are waist — where the belt will sit, over your clothing — and inside leg, measured from the crotch to where you want the hem, usually just over the boot. Thigh measurement matters too if you are muscular. Send all three with the Custom option; chaps sized for bare legs will not close over trousers.
The side zips
Full-length zips down the outside of each leg let you put chaps on over boots without taking anything off, which is the whole practical advantage. Store them with the zips closed so the panels are not pulled apart, and wax the teeth once a year so the sliders do not drag — these are long zips that take real strain.
An honest note on protection
These are a fashion garment. They are not certified protective equipment, carry no armour or abrasion rating and no CE or UKCA certification, and they are not sold as motorcycle riding gear. Cowhide offers more abrasion resistance than denim, but that is not the same as certified protection. If you ride and want protection, buy purpose-made certified kit.
Sizing and made to order
Sizes run XS to 5XL, with Custom taking waist over clothing, thigh, and inside leg. Every pair is cut after your order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are chaps trousers?
No. They have no seat or crotch — two legs joined by a belt, worn over your own trousers.
Why are they open at the back?
So they go on and off over boots without removing anything, and so they add leather to the front of the leg without the heat of a second pair of trousers.
How should I measure for them?
Over the trousers you will wear them with — waist at the belt line, inside leg, and thigh.
Do the side zips need care?
Store them closed and wax the teeth once a year; they are long zips that take real strain.
Are they protective riding gear?
No. They carry no armour, no abrasion rating and no safety certification.
Do you offer custom sizing?
Yes. Choose Custom and send waist over clothing, thigh, and inside leg.
Is shipping free?
Yes, free worldwide shipping and secure checkout.
Size & fit
Measure your natural waist, the fullest part of your hips and the inside leg from crotch to ankle. For chaps, also measure your thigh over the trousers you plan to wear.
Use a flexible measuring tape. Keep measurements in one unit: centimetres or inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Enter the unit selected in the custom-size form.
How to take body measurements
Ask another person to help. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Record your body measurements without adding extra room.
- 5 — Chest / bust: around the fullest part, under the arms.
- 6 — Waist: around the natural waistline.
- 7 — Hips: around the fullest part.
- 15 — Sleeve: from shoulder to wrist with the elbow slightly bent.
- 19 — Inseam: from crotch to ankle.
