Men B3 Bomber Raf Leather Shearling Jacket
The RAF pattern differs from the American B3 in small ways that matter to anyone who cares about these jackets. The collar is cut deeper and sits differently against the throat, the body is slightly longer, and the strap arrangement is simpler. This is that British pattern, made in real sheepskin with the wool left on the inside. If you have been comparing B3s and wondering why they are not all the same shape, this is the answer.
- Material: Real sheepskin with natural shearling wool lining
- Fit: Bomber cut, slightly longer than the American B3
- Closure: Front zip with collar strap
- Color: Brown with natural wool
- Care: Dry cloth on the leather, brush the wool, never wash
RAF against American pattern
The American B3 has a short, wide body and twin buckle straps across a high collar — built for a bomber crew sitting still at altitude. The RAF version, which British crews wore, is cut a little longer in the body with a deeper collar that folds down more naturally when unbuckled, and a simpler single-strap arrangement.
Practically, the RAF cut wears better off the aircraft. The longer body covers more, the collar looks less severe worn open, and the simpler strap means less hardware sitting under your chin. Both are correct historically; this is the one most people find easier to wear day to day.
Sheepskin construction
One skin, two functions: the hide blocks wind entirely, the wool traps warm air against you. There is no separate lining to shift or wadding to compress, which is why sheepskin jackets stay as warm in year ten as in year one.
Seams are stitched with heavy thread and the wool is left full rather than sheared thin, because the depth of the fleece is what does the insulating. Cuffs and hem are finished in sheepskin too, so there is no cold gap at the wrist.
Weight and fit
It is heavy. Full sheepskin weighs several times what a plain leather jacket does, and there is no version of this jacket that is not. In exchange you get warmth nothing lighter can match.
Take your normal size. The pattern already allows for a jumper underneath, so do not size up unless you want it loose. See our full B3 Bomber Jackets range for the American pattern, or our Shearling Leather Jackets for other shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the RAF and American B3?
The RAF cut is slightly longer in the body with a deeper collar and a simpler strap arrangement. The American B3 is shorter and wider with twin buckle straps.
Is the wool real sheepskin?
Yes, the natural fleece of the same hide rather than a fake fur lining.
Is this military surplus?
No. It is a reproduction of the RAF pattern in new sheepskin, built to the original proportions.
Is it heavy?
Yes, considerably heavier than a plain leather jacket. That weight is where the warmth comes from.
What size should I order?
Your normal size. Room for a jumper is already built into the pattern.
Can I wear it in the rain?
Light rain is fine. Wipe it and let it dry naturally, never near a heater, and never soak it.
How do I care for it?
Dry cloth on the leather, soft brush on the wool. Never machine wash, dry clean or soak sheepskin.
Size & fit
Measure your chest or bust at the fullest point, natural waist, shoulder width and sleeve length. Allow for the clothing you plan to wear underneath when discussing fit.
Use a flexible measuring tape. Keep measurements in one unit: centimetres or inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Enter the unit selected in the custom-size form.
How to take body measurements
Ask another person to help. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Record your body measurements without adding extra room.
- 5 — Chest / bust: around the fullest part, under the arms.
- 6 — Waist: around the natural waistline.
- 7 — Hips: around the fullest part.
- 15 — Sleeve: from shoulder to wrist with the elbow slightly bent.
- 19 — Inseam: from crotch to ankle.
