Overview & specifications
Jet Black Wool Varsity Jacket
The Jet Black Wool Varsity Jacket is the traditional construction — a wool melton body with leather sleeves — in a single dark colour. That combination of an original build and a modern colourway is unusual, and it produces a jacket that is easier to wear than either a two-tone varsity or an all-leather one.
- Material: Wool blend melton body with leather sleeves
- Fit: Regular fit
- Closure: Front snap buttons
- Color: Jet black
- Care: Brush the wool, wipe the leather sleeves, dry naturally away from heat
Why wool for the body
Melton is wool that has been milled and pressed until the fibres lock together, producing a dense, firm cloth that holds a shape rather than draping. It is warm, it breathes, and it takes a snap placket cleanly — which is why varsity jackets have used it for a century.
Wool also breathes far better than leather, so a wool-bodied varsity is more comfortable indoors and in mild weather than an all-leather one. The trade-off is that wool pills and thins over years where leather softens and improves.
Leather where the wear is
The sleeves are leather because sleeves take almost all the abrasion on a jacket — desks, bag straps, door frames, car doors. Body panels barely wear by comparison. Putting the hard-wearing material only where it is needed was a cost decision a century ago and it is still the sensible one.
The leather sleeves will crease at the elbow and pick up a slight sheen along the forearm within a season. That is the part of the jacket that visibly ages.
Fit, comfort and styling
Regular fit with room for a knit or hoodie underneath at your usual size. Rib hem at the waist. Size down one for closer over a tee.
All black makes it far more wearable than a two-tone varsity — it goes with jeans and trainers, chinos and boots, or dark trousers. Keep other colours quiet and the texture difference between wool and leather does the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the whole jacket leather?
No — the body is wool blend melton and the sleeves are leather. That is the traditional varsity construction.
Why wool rather than all leather?
Wool breathes far better, so it is more comfortable indoors and in mild weather. All-leather is more wind-resistant and ages better.
Will the wool pill?
Melton is dense and resists pilling well, but wool does eventually thin at high-wear points. Brush it rather than washing it.
Will a hoodie fit underneath?
Yes at your normal size — layering room is part of the varsity cut.
Can I add lettering?
Ask before ordering and we will confirm what we can apply.
How do I clean the two materials?
Brush and spot clean the wool; wipe the leather sleeves and condition them occasionally. Never machine wash.
Do you offer custom sizing?
Yes — XS to 5XL plus Custom to your own measurements.
Size & fit
Measure your chest or bust at the fullest point, natural waist, shoulder width and sleeve length. Allow for the clothing you plan to wear underneath when discussing fit.
Use a flexible measuring tape. Keep measurements in one unit: centimetres or inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Enter the unit selected in the custom-size form.
How to take body measurements
Ask another person to help. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Record your body measurements without adding extra room.
- 5 — Chest / bust: around the fullest part, under the arms.
- 6 — Waist: around the natural waistline.
- 7 — Hips: around the fullest part.
- 15 — Sleeve: from shoulder to wrist with the elbow slightly bent.
- 19 — Inseam: from crotch to ankle.
