Built as a canvas

A varsity jacket is meant to accumulate things. The back panel here is a single clean piece with no seam running across it, which matters if a large letter or patch is going on — stitching across a seam gives an uneven result and weakens the line under load.

The chest is left plain for the same reason, and the hide is heavy enough for a tailor or leather repair shop to stitch onto without the panel distorting. If you want lettering arranged, message us before ordering and we will tell you what is possible.

Leather rather than wool

A traditional school varsity uses a wool melton body with leather sleeves. This one is leather throughout, which changes it in three ways: it blocks wind completely where wool does not, it wipes clean rather than absorbing rain, and it is heavier and reads as outerwear rather than sportswear.

Build

Snap front placket, each snap set through a reinforced tab so it does not tear out of the hide. Dense knit rib at the collar, cuffs and hem that recovers rather than stretching out — slack ribbing is how a varsity loses its shape for good. Two side pockets set at an angle so they work seated or standing. Interior pocket and a smooth lining.

Seams are double stitched with reinforcement at the shoulders, where the sleeve load concentrates.

Fit and styling

Regular varsity fit, cut roomier than a modern bomber by design, with a deeper armhole so it goes over a hoodie without pulling. Take your normal size — that room is already built in, so avoid sizing up unless you want it noticeably loose.
