Overview & specifications

Black Suede Leather Jacket

The Black Suede Leather Jacket is real leather finished from the flesh side, so the fibres stand up as a soft nap instead of presenting a smooth grain. Black suede is a different proposition from black smooth leather in look, in feel, and above all in care — and the care is where most people go wrong. It sits in our men fashion leather jackets range.

  • Material: Genuine suede leather with a fine nap
  • Fit: Regular fit
  • Closure: Front zip
  • Color: Black
  • Care: Suede brush and suede eraser only — never conditioner, never water

Why black suede looks different from black leather

Smooth leather reflects light in highlights, so a black leather jacket shows every fold as a bright line. Suede absorbs light instead, so it reads as a deep, even matt — more like heavy cloth than like a shiny surface. That makes black suede considerably less dramatic than black smooth leather, which is precisely why it works in situations where a biker jacket would be too much: over a shirt with chinos, under an overcoat, at anything even slightly smart.

The one problem: lint

Black suede shows dust and lint more than any other leather finish, because pale fibres sit visibly on a dark nap. It is not a fault and it is easily solved — a suede brush, used regularly, lifts everything off and re-lofts the nap at the same time. A minute after each wear is all it takes. What you must not do is use a sticky lint roller, which flattens and pulls the nap.

Correct suede care

Two tools only. A suede brush to lift the nap and even out the colour — brushing in one direction makes patchy-looking suede uniform again. A suede eraser for shiny worn spots, which appear at the cuffs and pocket edges first. A suede protector spray before first wear, reapplied once a season, is worth the small cost. Never apply leather conditioner or oil, which flatten the nap permanently, and keep it out of the rain, which stiffens suede and can leave a tide mark.

Wearing it

Suede reads softer and quieter than smooth leather, so it goes with more: denim, chinos, wool trousers, knitwear. It is a dry-weather jacket by nature.

Stated plainly: a fashion jacket. No armour, no safety certification, not sold as riding gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is suede real leather?

Yes. It is genuine leather finished from the inner side so the fibres form a soft nap.

Why does it collect lint?

Pale dust shows against a dark nap. A suede brush removes it and re-lofts the nap at the same time.

Can I use a lint roller?

No. Sticky rollers flatten and pull the nap. Use a suede brush.

Can I use leather conditioner?

No. Conditioner and oil flatten the nap permanently.

What if it gets wet?

Avoid it. Water stiffens suede and can leave a permanent tide mark.

Do you offer custom sizing?

Yes. Choose Custom and send chest, waist, shoulder, sleeve, and body length.

Is shipping free?

Yes, free worldwide shipping and secure checkout.
