Overview & specifications
Black Fleece Varsity Jacket
The Black Fleece Varsity Jacket is the soft, casual end of the letterman range. Fleece is not wool and it is not leather — it is a knitted synthetic pile, and it makes a jacket that is lighter, warmer for its weight and far easier to look after than either.
- Material: Fleece body with ribbed knit trim
- Fit: Regular fit
- Closure: Front snap buttons
- Color: Black
- Care: Machine wash cool, do not tumble dry hot, no fabric softener
What fleece actually is
Fleece is a knitted fabric — usually polyester — that is brushed to raise a soft pile on one or both faces. That pile traps air, which is what makes it warm, and because the fibre is synthetic it holds almost no water and dries quickly.
Compared with wool: fleece is lighter for the same warmth, cheaper, and machine washable, but it does not block wind the way melton does and it pills over time at friction points. Compared with leather: it is far warmer for its weight and infinitely easier to care for, but it has none of leather's wind resistance or longevity.
Where a fleece varsity fits
This is the one you wear casually and often — the jacket that goes in the wash rather than to a specialist. It works for dog walks, the school run, weekends and travel, in the way a leather or wool varsity does not.
The ribbed knit collar, cuffs and hem and the snap front placket keep the varsity outline intact, so it still reads as a proper letterman shape rather than as a sweatshirt.
Fit, care and honest notes
Regular fit with room for a knit underneath at your usual size. Rib hem at the waist. Size down for a closer fit over a tee.
Care matters with fleece: wash cool, avoid fabric softener — it coats the fibres and reduces loft — and do not tumble dry hot, which mats the pile permanently. Expect some pilling at friction points over time; that is normal for the material rather than a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this leather?
No. The body is fleece — a knitted synthetic pile. We do not describe it as leather.
Is fleece as warm as wool?
Warmer for its weight, but it does not block wind the way wool melton does.
Can I machine wash it?
Yes — cool wash, no fabric softener, and do not tumble dry hot.
Will it pill?
Some pilling at friction points is normal for fleece over time.
Why avoid fabric softener?
It coats the fibres and reduces the loft that makes fleece warm.
Does it still look like a varsity jacket?
Yes — ribbed collar, cuffs and hem plus a snap front keep the letterman outline.
Do you offer custom sizing?
Yes — XS to 5XL plus Custom to your own measurements.
Size & fit
Measure your chest or bust at the fullest point, natural waist, shoulder width and sleeve length. Allow for the clothing you plan to wear underneath when discussing fit.
Use a flexible measuring tape. Keep measurements in one unit: centimetres or inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Enter the unit selected in the custom-size form.
How to take body measurements
Ask another person to help. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. Record your body measurements without adding extra room.
- 5 — Chest / bust: around the fullest part, under the arms.
- 6 — Waist: around the natural waistline.
- 7 — Hips: around the fullest part.
- 15 — Sleeve: from shoulder to wrist with the elbow slightly bent.
- 19 — Inseam: from crotch to ankle.
